Slowly Quieting Storms

July 31st, 2009 by Travis Christy under Weather Outlook

A ridge will continue to build over the southwest slowly cutting off storms. However, a front will slide into the eastern plains overnight Friday into Saturday that will recharge theatmosphere . Showers will continue across much of the east as a result of this. As for the west, conditions will be a little drier with a good chance for dry thunderstorms that mainly create wind.

A Busy Storm Day Thursday

July 30th, 2009 by Travis Christy under Weather Outlook

Holy Molly!!! What else can be said about the amazing day Thursday has brought the weather department.  A series of storms formed early in the afternoon and turned severe.  Some storms even went tornadic, even though there were no confirmed tornadoes on the ground.  Needless to say, Thursday brought belly washers!  Friday will be much quieter as drier air works in.  Still a spot shower is not out of the question.

Another Round of Storms

July 29th, 2009 by Jason Laney under Weather Outlook

The recent trend of daily thunderstorms may well be coming to an end.  But not before we deal with a a couple of more stormy afternoons.  Scattered showers and storms will once again develop across the region Thursday afternoon.  Some of these could well deliver very heavy rainfall.

Thursday's stormy action will be the direct result of yet another fresh supply of low level moist air behind a southbound cool front.  And true to it's name, this front will bring cooler temps to roughly the eastern two thirds of New Mexico.

While storm coverage will  be reduced somewhat Friday, there will still be a few afternoon showers and storms  popping up in the left over moist air.  Meanwhile, high pressure should get a firm grip on the area by the weekend.  As a result, drier and warmer conditions will prevail across much of the Land of Enchantment.

Staying Stormy

July 28th, 2009 by Jason Laney under Weather Outlook

Showers & thunderstorms will continue to pop up during the heat of the afternoon and continue into the evening hours prior to fading away overnight.  This trend is expected to remain in place through the end of the work week, with the northern mountains and northeast plains receiving the bulk of the story weather.

The basic weather set-up is the same as it has been for a couple of weeks now.  Cool fronts back into the region from the north, keeping moist air in place across the area.  A combination of lift from the front and daytime heating helps to convert this moisture into afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Once the weekend arrives, things may be starting to change.  Less stormy weather is expected this weekend along with warmer summer temps.  This will happen as high pressure gets repositioned over the Land of Enchantment.  Indications are that the high may drift east next week, setting up the monsoon pattern that has been absent the past few weeks.

Stormy Next Few Days

July 27th, 2009 by Jason Laney under Weather Outlook

Showers and storms possible over the next few days as a series of fronts work in from the north.  Severe storms will be possible in the east.  Temperatures will remain in the 90's with overnight lows hanging in the 60's.
Conditions will be much drier toward the end of the week as the jet flattens out.  Following the weekend the monsoon looks like it may set back up over the region bringing back scattered showers into next week.

More Storms Expected

July 26th, 2009 by Jason Laney under Weather Outlook

Showers and thunderstorms will be a little less numerous Monday as opposed to Sunday.  However, the action will definitely continue in spots, especially near the northern and central mountains.  Meanwhile, shower & storm activity will pick up again Tuesday thanks to a fresh supply of moist air behind yet another back door cool front.

Speaking of back door cool fronts, the current pattern that is allowing for these fronts is likely to remain unchanged for several more days.  Each front will not only add moisture to the air, but also provide a focus for storm development as they move through.  After Tuesday's front moves through, it looks as if the next cool front will slip in late Wednesday and early Thursday.

Weekend Weather

July 24th, 2009 by Jason Laney under Weather Outlook

The weekend will kick off in much the same way that the work week came to an end.... with hot temperatures and scattered afternoon showers.  The temperature will fall off a few degrees by Sunday and the coverage of storms will be on the increase.

As far as Saturdays showers are concerned, it appears that the greatest coverage will be over the northern mountains.  There will be fewer storms south and west thanks to a dominate ridge of high pressure that will be camped out overhead.

This ridge will slide south & west Sunday, opening the door to a back door coll front across the eastern half of the state.   This front will not only bring slightly cooler conditions, but it will also replenish the moisture across the region.  This is the rpimary reason for the increase in shower and storm activity as we wrap up the weekend.
