From the time he injured his knee in the Chicago Bears last game of the 2011 season, you could see it coming. Brian Urlacher’s days on a football field were numbered. After 13 NFL seasons, the 8 time Pro Bowl linebacker has decided to shut it down. Through his twitter account Urlacher said he was retiring because he didn’t feel like he could play up to his standards. He also hinted that his passion wasn’t at the level it needed to be. Since coming into the league and snagging rookie of the year honors in 2000, Urlacher has been the anchor of a very successful Bears defense. He leaves the game as the Bears all time leader in tackles with 1,779. The 2005 Defensive Player of the Year also recorded 41 and a half sacks and 22 interceptions. Before the Bears, he was Brian Urlacher the All American Lobo who lead the nation in tackles. He also scored on both sides of the football. With lightning speed, Urlacher returned his share of punts for a touchdown wearing Lobos cherry and silver. Scoring on both sides of the ball was just a habit he carried over from Lovington High School. Maybe I should consider myself blessed because I got to watch Urlacher dominate a game on both sides of the football while leading Lovington to a state title his senior year. He was unbelievable as a receiver. I don’t know how many people know but, he was equally dominate as a basketball player. Yes…I am telling you he could have had just as much success as a basketball player. I will miss all of his athletic skills. The kids attending his football camps each year will miss getting to play with Urlacher . He became one of them at those camps. One big kid. Thanks Urlacher for all of the memories.

Before you head out there door this morning – here are the five things you need to know about!

     5) Kids this is the day you’ve been waiting for–the last day of school for APS. But don’t stop reading…the state has a new contest…you read books…you could win prizes…even a trip to Disney World in Florida.

     4) Heads up, do not go into the Bosque in parts of New Mexico because it’s now closed. This is the Bosque North and South of Albuquerque and in Sandoval, Valencia and Socorro counties.

     3) It’s getting hot…Today will be sunny, with a high near 84 with a light Southwest wind increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the morning. Then tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 59 and a Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.

     2) Looking to help out the people in Moore, Oklahoma hit by that massive tornado? Don’t get scammed. The Attorney General’s Office says go with charities that you’ve heard of and avoid e-mails asking you to donate.

     1) The search for survivors is pretty much done in moore. Emergency workers say they’ve gone through all buildings three times and are confident no one is still buried. At least 24 people died in the storm…including 9 children.

He made his first start as a pitcher for the Albuquerque Isotopes Monday. Tuesday right handed pitcher Steve Smith packed his bags for double A Chattanooga. Pitcher Matt McGill’s return to the Isotopes sealed Smith’s fate. McGill had been up with the Dodgers while Smith logged time with the Isotopes. He joined the Isotopes May 5th and has played the role of relief pitcher. When he got his first start Monday, Smith said it felt like his old Lobo days when Isotopes park was his home field. Smith said he ran out of gas in the 4th inning. That is how long he worked, allowing two runs and striking out a career best 6 batters. The stay was short. Innings pitched were short. But, the memory will last a lifetime.

Time now for the five things you need to know before you go this morning!

     5) If you’ve been taken advantage of by the guy police call “El Dentista”…you can now go get free help. Head to the Santa Fe County Public Health Office anytime. Investigators say Eliver Kestler was running an illegal, mobile dental practice out of his car with these filthy tools.

     4) Get those resumes all up to date because the City of Albuquerque just set aside more money…for more jobs. They’re everywhere from City Hall to the Biopark…animal shetlers and more! Go to KRQE Links to learn more.

     3) Today will be a nice day! Today will be sunny, with a high near 75 and a North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming West in the afternoon. Then tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 52 and a West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable in the evening.

     2) New Mexico’s Red Cross is on stand-by this morning…because volunteers and emergency response vehicles could be on their way to Oklahoma. We should learn their plans about 9 this morning.

     1) The search is now on to find survivors buried in the rubble after a huge tornado wiped out a town in Oklahoma. At least 51 people are dead…including 20 children and dozens more are missing. The tornado ripped through moore yesterday afternoon…it’s just south of Oklahoma City. It hit two elementary schools and a hospital.

The New Mexico Department of Health is asking anyone who received dental services in their homes or other non-clinic settings to be aware of the potential for transmission of bloodborne diseases. If you received dental services in your home or other non-healthcare setting at any time by a man known as “El Dentista” and other names, including Eliver Kestler or Eliver Lopez, the New Mexico Department of Health is offering counseling and testing services. The services will include counseling, no-cost confidential blood tests and referrals to additional services if needed.

Bloodborne diseases can be transmitted to people receiving dental procedures when good infection prevention is not in place. The New Mexico Department of Health has no information at this time that anyone has been infected after receiving these services. It is possible to be infected with bloodborne diseases without knowing it. The only way to know for certain is to get tested.

A brief, confidential interview will be offered before testing is conducted for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV in order to determine if people need to be tested more than one time and if any additional services are needed. All counseling and testing is free and confidential.

The New Mexico Department of Health recommends:

If you received any of the dental services offered by “El Dentista”, call the New Mexico Department of Health at 505.827.0006 to answer your questions and to learn where to go for counseling and testing.

Inform anyone you know who may have received such dental services that the New Mexico Department of Health would like to talk with them and offer public health services.

You do not need to call first if you want to be tested. You may go directly to the Santa Fe County Public Health Office without an appointment. The office is located at 605 Letrado St. behind the Salvador Perez Pool. You will be seen confidentially and free of charge between the hours of 8:00-11:00 am or 1:00-3:00 pm Monday through Thursday for counseling and testing (for directions, you can call the public health office at 505-476-2600).
