Holloman Air Force Base has abruptly canceled its the annual Community Day this Saturday because of the federal sequestration budget cuts.

A statement released late this afternoon said the decision was made after recent guidance from the Air Force on how to handle the automatic budget cuts imposed by Congress and the administration.

“This cancellation is about making the most out of available funds,” Col. Andrew Croft, 49th Wing commander, said in the statement. “We must all collectively be good stewards of taxpayer dollars, and readiness remains the wing’s top priority.

“The timing of this decision is unfortunate, however, we have to do what’s best for the 49th Wing and our nation.”

Early Saturday morning an Amtrak engine moved the steam engine’s fuel tender to the Alavardo Transportation Center where it joined other equipment for the day’s events.

(KRQE News 13′s Bob Martin covered the move for KRQE News 13 at 5:30 p.m.)

Train Day events run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Amtrak and Rail Runner Express stations on First Street SW and via free shuttle at the Wheels Museum off Second Street SW.

The annual national event celebrates modern and historic railroads on or near May 10, the anniversary of driving the golden spike that completed the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Amtrak, Rail Runner Express, BNSF Railway and model railroad clubs will have equipment on display, and there will be food and entertainment.

The free event is sponsored by the Rio Metro Regional Transit District and Amtrak. Steam engine 2926 is being restored by the New Mexico Steam Locomotive and Railroad Historical Society.

A series of meetings to gather comments and ideas on bus rapid transit in Albuquerque begins tonight and continues through the end of the month.

This is the second round of sessions after meetings in November and December came up with ideas for passenger convenience that included:

Boarding platforms level with the floor of the bus, easing and speeding the boarding process.

Off-bus fare collection enabling riders to purchase tickets outside the bus, reducing waiting time to get on the bus.

A smart signal system, allowing buses to communicate with traffic signals and reducing delays.

Now the process is looking at two basic alternatives for setting up a system with the existing confines of Central Avenue. Among those issues are configuring dedicated bus lanes and the considerations that go into selecting good stations locations.

The schedule of public meetings is:

Tuesday, May 7, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.: Old Main Library – Special Collections, Botts Hall – 423 Central NE

Wednesday, May 8, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.: Mesa Verde Community Center – 7900 Marquette NE

Tuesday, May 14, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.: Loma Linda Community Center – 1700 Yale SE

Wednesday, May 22, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.: Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center – 501 Elizabeth SE

Tuesday, May 28, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.: Alamosa Community Center– 6900 Gonzales Rd SW

Wednesday, May 29, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. :Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, Ventana Salon – 2000 Mountain NW
