5 Things You Need to Know Before You Go

5. A warning this morning from the State Poison Control Center about a product that’s already claimed the life of an Ohio teenager.  Powdered caffeine is easily found online, and is difficult to measure properly which can easily lead to an overdose.   Health officials warn, even if you don’t overdose, the product could cause problems.  The Federal Food and Drug Administration is looking at regulating powdered caffeine products, but in the meantime, it’s recommended that people avoid them all together.

4.  The folks at the New Mexico Rail Runner are taking saving lives seriously.  The Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG), which operates the commuter train, has installed five crossing guards at various stops along the track.  The Rail Runner will also slow down a bit at these crossings, which MRCOG says will delay the train a minute or two. The hope is these safety innovations will keep deadly accidents from happening along the train line.

3. New Mexico congressman Steve Pearce and a couple of his House Veterans Affairs committee colleagues are holding a hearing in Roswell today about getting medical services to veterans in rural areas. The meeting comes on the heels of a national scandal revealing some veterans actually died while waiting for an appointment.  A recently concluded study by the State VA shows in the cases they looked at, no New Mexico veterans died while waiting for an appointment.

2.  School starts a week from today, and administrators at Albuquerque Public Schools have their hands full making sure damage at various district properties from recent heavy rains is cleaned up before the school year begins.   AlbuquerqueHigh School’s Performing Arts Center got hit hard.  The district is working hard to complete repairs at all the schools that were damaged before the first day of school next Wednesday.

1.  A warm and dry day is in store for us, with no storms in the forecast. Sunny, with a high near 93, and calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight it’ll be mostly clear, with a low around 62 and a southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
