A prescribed burn started today in southern New Mexico.

Officials say Monday they’re setting fire to more than 800 acres in the Smokey Bear Ranger District in the Lincoln.

The goal is to lower the risk of out of control wildfires. The work is expected to take a week, but that depends on weather conditions.

Fire restrictions in the forest have recently been downgraded thanks to recent rains.
