More Record Highs TodayJune 4th, 2014 at 12:50 pm by John Smith under Weather
More record heat is on the way this afternoon. Albuquerque will reach the upper 90s to near 100° again this afternoon. Meanwhile, much of southern New Mexico will climb well into the 100s. In fact areas like Carlsbad will push toward 110°. Adding to fire concerns will be breezy to occasionally windy conditions, and spot dry thunderstorm chances across the east. Those dry thunderstorms will continue in eastern New Mexico through the rest of the week, as will the heat.
The ridge of high pressure gradually shifts east of the state by the weekend. This will allow a back door cold front to push east to west into New Mexico late Saturday into Sunday. This will increase shower and storm chances for the central mountain chain and points east. The front will also help cool temperatures. It will remain hot, but at least some of the edge will be taken off this heat.
Next week will be largely quiet. Some storms will be possible over the higher terrain Monday and Tuesday. The state will mainly dry out from what little moisture we see over the weekend. Temperatures will also climb a bit, but are not expected to be quite as hot as this week.
