Severe T-Storm & Tornado Watches….May 24th, 2014 at 2:00 pm by chrisgilson under Weather
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all the counties shaded in yellow in Eastern New Mexico until 9 pm. A Tornado Watch runs until 9 pm for Lea and Eddy County.
These watches mean conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorm and tornado development, but not that one is actually occurring.
A warning means severe weather is ongoing in your area and you need to take cover. So be weather aware today and listening out for severe weather warnings that could be issued later today.
Severe storms could produce hail the size of quarters or larger and winds of 58 mph or greater.
If your area is issued a tornado warning you need to seek shelter in a sturdy building by getting on the lowest level of your home preferably a basement. If you do not have a basement get into the interior part of your house in a room like a bathroom or closet. A room that does not have windows and put as many as walls between you and the outside of your home. You can also cover yourself with a mattress and/or wear a helmet to protect your head.
