SFPD plans donor drive for sick teenMay 18th, 2014 at 3:30 pm by KRQE Staff under Latest Posts
The Santa Fe Police Department is working to help a young girl, but they’ll need the public’s help Monday to do it.
Miquela Martinez, 16, is from Ojo Caliente.
She was diagnosed with a rare disease that causes her red blood cells to break apart and release hemoglobin which keeps them from carrying oxygen through her body.
The once vibrant teen is now confined to a hospital bed so she can have daily blood infusions.
Doctors say a bone marrow transplant could save her life, but they’ve been unable to find a donor.
The Santa Fe Police Department is holding a donor drive at the police station Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Testing is easy; all they need is a cheek swab.
