It faced some pretty tough competition, but USA Today readers chose New Mexico green chile as the most iconic American food.

The contest started earlier this month and generated tens of thousands of votes.

The magazine cites that no freezer is ever without frozen green chile and Americans seem to top everything with chile, from cheeseburgers to eggs.

Of course, the magazine calls it green chile sauce which is sacrilege in New Mexico, but we’ll accept the title anyway.

Other foods on the list following chile include Maryland crabs, Philly cheese steak and key lime pie from Key West.

Green/Red Chili is our state Veggie and is the Chile Capital in the world! Many chefs temp to change our chili recipes to suit their taste to the point that when it reaches New York, it completely loses its original flavor and taste nothing like New Mexico chili that’s were it’s sacrilegious!
