DJ Peterson ready for his close upJune 5th, 2013 at 9:22 pm by vantate under Sports
He came to the University of New Mexico in the 11th hour. When plans to accept a scholarship at another school fell through, DJ Peterson found himself wearing cherry and silver. He made an impact immediately. Peterson led the Lobos at the plate as a freshman with a .317 average, setting an a freshman NCAA record for doubles with 32. Lobos skipper Ray Birmingham is known for making good hitters great. Peterson is more proof. His sophomore and this his junior year were equally impressive with Peterson pulling in a Mountain West co Player of the Year award along with All American honors. The Golden Spikes watch list has his name as well as the Dick Howser Trophy watch list. With so much honor so fast coach Birmingham knew better than to think his talented junior would be available for a senior season. The Major League Baseball Draft will surely claim Peterson this week. Most mock drafts project him as a first round pick. He is considered one of the best hitters in the draft. It doesn’t hurt that he batted .408 this season on a team that lead the entire nation with a collective .334 average. Lobo fans will miss his bat. Opponents will cheer his departure to the pros. Wherever he lands, expect Peterson to still spin the hits just like he has in college. Afterall, his name is DJ.
