The 21st annual Great American Cleanup is drawing 1,000 volunteers to help spruce up the city on Saturday.
The volunteers represent 80 organizations. Last year 650 volunteers picked up about 10 tons of trash.
Organizers are hoping to collect 15 tons this year between 8 a.m. and noon.
The picking up trash, one group is planting 24 trees at Young Park, and another is painting a mural in the 700 block of South Espina Street.
The NMSU women’s soccer team has staked out an industrial stretch of Amador Avenue for cleaning, and six public schools are staging cleanup and beautification projects.
