Free fishing derby at Tingley Beach

Anglers of all ages will have a chance to compete for prizes Saturday in the 7th Annual Free Fishing Derby at Tingley Beach.

Two hundred tagged trout are among the 5,000 trout released into the lagoons along Tingley Drive south of Central Avenue SW.

Tagged fish that are caught can be exchanged for prizes.

In addition the first 50 kids ages 8 and under who catch any trout tagged or not win a “Pirates of the Caribbean” sleeping bag.

The derby is free, but participants ages 12 and over must have a New Mexico fishing licenses.  Licenses will not be sold at Tingley but are available at the Kmart just west across the Rio Grande at Atrisco Boulevard SW and Central Avenue.

The event begins at 7:15 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.

On Friday Tingley Beach will close at 5 p.m. to prepare for Saturday’s event.
