Chile cheats beware

Rep. Rodolpho “Rudy” Martinez wants to turn up the heat on out-of-state chile producers trading on New Mexico names.

The Democrat from Bayard in Grant County is sponsoring House Bill 238 to expand the reach of the current New Mexico Chile Advertising Act.

The changes take aim at chile from other states marketed using New Mexico names like Hatch and Chimayó.

If it becomes law, Martinez’s bill would require those producers to label their products as “Not Grown in New Mexico.”

The House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee approved the bill yesterday.  It now moves to the House Judiciary Committee for further consideration.

Sen. George Muñoz, D-Gallup, is sponsoring similar legislation, Senate Bill 234, in the state Senate.

Wake up Google. This article you included under Chile (the country) has nothing to do with it. It refers to the fruit chile. Please be more careful next time.
