The Conference ShuffleDecember 13th, 2012 at 3:10 pm by vantate under Sports
What have we learned from all of the conference shuffling in college athletics? I guess that depends on the person and their experience. We have learned that money is the basis of everything. Remember this, “for the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil”? If you are trying to remember where you heard or saw that let me help. It’s 1 Timothy 6:10 in the Holy Bible. The wisdom in that book could come in handy for those making decisions to end old historic rivalries and have student athletes travel from coast to coast. I thought they were also there to get an education. Oh wait….that’s the old student athlete. The new student athlete is there to make the University money. All of that has become a reality because of the love of money. Let’s give credit where it is due. Everyone didn’t throw caution to the wind for a cash grab. The Air Force Falcons had a chance to join the Big East but passed, opting to stay in the Mountain West Conference. It is, geographically, a wise decision. Boise State and San Diego State decided to take their chances and take the plunge, leaving the Mountain West for the Big East in football only. Now look. Seven non fbs schools want out of the Big East. What will become of the Big East if those schools leave? How can they negotiate for a large television contract if they do not know their members? What will Boise State and San Diego State do? You can make a legitimate arguement that they are much better off returning to the Mountain West. Basic wisdom would have kept both teams out of the situation they now find themselves in. When money is driving a decision, it must have a touch of wisdom applied. To do anything less is, you guessed it, not wise.
