Prescribed burning at Smokey Bear Ranger DistrictDecember 7th, 2012 at 1:30 pm by ryanprice under Latest Posts, Wildfires
Fire officials at the Smokey Bear Ranger District are conducting controlled burns to protect from future wildfires.
The burning activities will take place around the Ruidoso area between December 10th and 21st when favorable conditions are present.
Firefighters will carefully monitor the progress through the prescribed area, lighting designated piles until they are eliminated.
“These prescribed fire projects will reduce fuel loads, which can help minimize potential wildfire risks and impacts to the area,” said Dan Ray, District Fuels Specialist.
If weather conditions become unfavorable for the prescribed burning, all operations will halt.
During this time, smoke may be visible from Ruidoso, Alto and surrounding areas. The smoke may also settle into drainages and lower elevations at night, but is expected to dissipate by late-morning.
