Toys for Tots drive builds toward finishDecember 6th, 2012 at 3:19 pm by Bill Diven under Community Affairs
The Marine Corps Reserve is in its final push for donations to the annual Toys for Tots campaign to provide toys for needy children at Christmas.
Today the effort included a call-in center based at Albuquerque Police Department headquarters that ran from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Callers making donations made arrangements with Reserve personnel to have their donations picked up.
Nearly 3,400 Albuquerque families registered through the city’s Department of Family and Community Services to receive toys and other items.
Last year the program distributed 20,000 toys and 40,000 stuff animals, books and board games, and the Reserve has set a goal of doing the same this year. However, the Toys for Tots drive so far had generated about 7,000 toys and $12,000 in donations.
The final event of the drive is on Monday with a daylong drop-off for new, unwrapped toys and cash donations in the parking lot of American Home Furnishings at Menaul and Carlisle NE.
Donations deposited in boxes around the city already have been collected.
Additional information and a link for making cash donations are available on the Albuquerque Toys for Tots website.
