A former operations battalion chief with the Farmington Fire Department has been named chief of the department at New Mexico State University.
Mario Acosta takes over Dec. 1 leading the department that includes student firefighters.
His 25 years working with public agencies includes experience in emergency response and management. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University and holds a master’s degree in public management from Northern Arizona University.
Most recently he was the deputy fire chief of the Woodinville Fire and Rescue District near Seattle. He began as a firefighter in Farmington in 1986 rising to operations battalion chief.
The NMSU department has four executive staff and 14 firefighters who also are full-time students.
