Help Queens, N.Y., hurricane victimsNovember 9th, 2012 at 3:34 pm by Bill Diven under Community Affairs
A former New York deputy chief fire inspector now living in New Mexico is collecting necessities to help his old neighbors get through the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy.
Archie Koenemund is gathering things like blankets, towels and toiletries to support residents of Hamilton Beach, his hometown, and nearby Breezy Point. Both took a beating from the hurricane and storm surge two weeks ago, and Breezy Point suffered further when it lost 180 homes to a flood-related fire.
“People lost everything,” Koenemund told KRQE News 13 reporter Lysee Mitri. “People lost their vehicles; people lost their homes.
“Only one person I know lost their life, a friend of mine’s grandmother. They found her floating in the high tide.”
The collection effort continues for another two weeks with volunteers from a local church driving the supplies to New York after Thanksgiving.
