The Department of Public Safety Motor Transportation Police recently wrapped up Operation Safe Driver which ran for one week last month around the state.
The results showed travelers doing a better job of using seat belts, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
Only six people in passenger vehicles were cited for failure to wear their safety belts while 38 commercial drivers were cited for that same infraction.
Speeding remains an issue, however.
Of the citations issued to passenger vehicles, 184 were for speeding. That was 69 percent of the citations.
On the commercial side, drivers received 187 speeding tickets, 54 percent of the total citations.
The goal of the operation was to increase awareness of seat belt usage and the dangers of distracted driving to make New Mexico roads safer., DPS said.
