Coldest Air of the Season!October 22nd, 2012 at 5:06 pm by John Smith under Weather
Days are numbered for the unseasonably warm weather in New Mexico! However, the heat isn’t giving up without a fight! Tuesday and Wednesday will feature some of the warmest temperatures we’ve seen over the past week. Highs in the metro will hit the upper 70s, but the southeast plains could set some records with highs in the low to mid-90s!
The storm system over the Pacific Northwest will dive toward Colorado by Wednesday. This will ramp up the westerly winds Wednesday afternoon and evening. Gusts up to 45 mph are possible in east central sections, particularly just east of the central mountain chain.
Wednesday night a cold front will drop into New Mexico, beginning a downward trend in temperatures. By the end of the week and start of the weekend, temperatures will plummet by as much as 35° in some locations. The metro will see highs in the mid 50s, while the southeast drops to the 50s and the northeast and Northern Mountains fall to the 40s. Even western New Mexico will see afternoon highs drop as much as 10° – 15°.
With colder air in place, Friday night looks to be the first widespread freeze of the season. Expect lows at or below freezing for the northern two-thirds of New Mexico Friday night.
