How many games can the Lobos win?
No one exepected Bob Davie and his Lobos to be at 4 and 3 at this point in the season. That is exactly where the Lobos sit with, dare I say, the possibility of going to a bowl game looming. Three more victories and the Lobos would become bowl eligible. One projection at ESPN has the Cherry and Silver going to the New Mexico Bowl at season’s end. Is it doable? Yes it is. Bob Davie says his team needs to continue to get better if they are to win another game. The Lobos are at Air Force saturday with a home game against Fresno State to follow. The Lobos find themselves in the top 20 in a handful of NCAA stats that are actually good for the team. They are 7th in rushing offense with 280.3 yards per game. The Lobos use a lot of time off the clock to get those yards and are 11th in time of possession with 33:08 minutes per game. The defense has forced 16 turnovers so far this season which is good for 12th in the nation. The Lobos are also tied for 19th in the nation in turnover margin and is 20th in red zone defense. Those are obviously good places to be on the NCAA stat sheet for a team that had only 3 total wins in as many years. A few more wins might bring the Lobos more than bowl eligibility. It could bring Bob Davie a Mountain West Coach of the Year award. That wouldn’t be bad for a guy who has sat out of coaching for a decade.
