Next time you visit the New Mexico State University main campus in Las Cruces, don’t forget to BYOB – bring your own water bottle, that is.
Just before spring break NMSU Plumber Javier Sanchez installed a donated water cooler and bottle-filling station in the high-traffic center as a green move to cut down on the flow of plastic bottles to landfills, save energy on bottle production and save consumers money.
In its first 17 days, the refilling station conserved more than 1,800 plastic bottles that otherwise would have been tossed or recycled, according to the university.
“This is the first bottle refilling station we have on campus,” Ben Gabriel, assistant director of Recreational Sports, said in a statement released by NMSU. “We’re actually looking within our own facility to add more, possibly near the track area.”
