In conflict: Power lines and migratory birds

February 10th, 2012 at 5:16 pm by under News

A diverse group of conservationists, utilities and government agencies will meet next week to discuss ways to reduce the effects of power lines on migratory birds.

Conflicts arise as birds, especially birds of prey, are attracted to power lines and poles because their heights offer the views they seek.  Electrocution is an obvious threat, but birds also collide with power lines especially when flying in low light.

The conference of the New Mexico Avian Protection Working Group on Feb. 14 and 15 will be held at the MCM Elegante Hotel, 2020 Menaul NE, and is sponsored by PNM and the Avian Power Line Interaction Committee, a national group of biologists employed by electric utilities.

Additional information on the conference and registration is available by contacting Rick Precek at (505) 228-1843 or by e-mail.
