Who’s the better Manning? Eli or Peyton?February 2nd, 2012 at 3:27 pm by Lawrence Gilligan under Latest Posts, Sports
As Superbowl 46 is upon us (finally,) Eli Manning finds himself taking snaps for his second Super Bowl title ring in five years.
The game is in Indianapolis. the city where his brother Peyton Manning has taken snaps under center since 1998.
I’m sure plenty of fan figured maybe, just maybe, this season would have been the year their beloved Colts made the Super Bowl a home game. However, Peyton’s season-long neck injury assured fans it would not happen as well as sparking the question who the better Manning is. Eli or Peyton?
Peyton is definitely more accurate and a proven winner: four-time NFL MVP, 11-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion in 2006.
Peyton was named the Super Bowl MVP. However, I think Eli is the better Manning. When Eli first joined the league, he had a huge shadow cast by Peyton, heck, and played for the New York Giants. Talk about the pressure of not only trying to live up to the Manning expectations of being a winning quarterback, backed by playing for a crowd that saw the Giants get rocked by the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV three years earlier.
Not only did Eli win a Super Bowl the year after his brother did, he finds himself one game away from flashing another Super Bowl ring in front of Peyton as well as his father Archie, who never won a Super Bowl let alone played in the playoffs.
Then again, we may not be talking about this if it wasn’t for the perfect grab by David Tyree in Super Bowl XLII to move the Giants into touchdown position, but then again, who would have thrown the game winning TD?
Van Tate and I got a chance to catch up with Archie Manning a couple of months ago at the New Mexico Bowl luncheon. Check out what he has to say about Peyton and how he thought there wasn’t a chance Eli would even be interested in playing football.
