More Wind For Thursday…

A strong storm system will pass north of the state over the next couple days.  As it does winds will pick up rapidly.  Wind gusts will hit 50mph on Thursday and 60 mph on Friday.  Temps will drop in a big way as well.  Here in the city temps will hit 60 Thursday only to stay in the 40′s on Friday.  There is some good news, the weekend looks nice and warmer.


Update: Albuquerque Police issue silver alert

The Albuquerque Police Department canceled the Silver Alert.

Police tells News 13 that Mabel Nolan found Wednesday night unharmed.

The Albuquerque Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing person who is suffering from Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

Mabel Nolan, 80, told friends she was going to walk about the residence grounds and was found missing a short time later.

Police tell News 13 that the front gate of the residence was open and she may have gotten into a pick-up truck at a landscaping business just north of the residence.

Anyone with information of Nolan’s whereabouts should call the Albuquerque Police Department at 505-242-COPS.

Two libraries offer free concerts Thursday

Cosy Sheridan and T. R. Ritchie bring their singing and storytelling talents to the South Broadway and East Mountain libraries Thursday.

Sheridan is known on the folk circuit for herentertaining and intelligent performances that meld music and children’s stories into tales of modern adulthood.

Richie, whose musical chops date to busking at Seattle’s Pike Street Market, is an award-winning songrwriter.

The duo also founded the week-long Moab Folk Camp in Moab, Utah.

The South Broadway performance begins at noon, the East Mountain show at 5:30 p.m., with doors opened 30 minutes before then.

Wednesday’s 5 Things to Know Before Five

Hear about the American Indian Movement from one of its founders, the DA can’t better her phone service without violating the law and movies don’t have to be long to be good.

5.  Legendary Native American activist Dennis Banks will be at New Mexico State University tomorrow for a screening of the documentary “A Good Day to Die” on his life and the founding of the American Indian Movement.  The free 5:30 screening at Corbett Center will be preceded by an hour-long reception and followed by a question-and-answer session.

4.  Mixed martial artist Carlos Condit of Albuquerque added another honor to his UFC championship career when Mayor Richard J. Berry proclaimed today “Carlos Condit Day.”  Condit is to receive the proclamation at Jackson Gym at 4 p.m.

3.  The Albuquerque city Senior Affairs Department is making home visits to register Alzheimer’s and dementia patients for the Silver Alert program.  Caregivers get a computer jump drive with the patient’s photo and information, which can be given to responding police if the patient is reported missing.   Call 764-6400 to schedule a registration appointment.

2.  District Attorney Kari Brandenburg is tired of missed calls and wants to pay less for her office phone service.  But as investigative reporter Larry Barker details on KRQE News 13 at 10 p.m., the only way she can do that is to break the law.

1.  The Taos Shortz Film Festival opens tomorrow with more than 70 short films showing through Sunday.  Free panel discussions also are planned with filmmakers and a New York-based animator.

Aviation photographer speaking at Balloon Museum

Internationally known aviation photographer Jay Miller will discuss his hardware, techniques and philosophy Saturday during a presentation at the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.

Miller is a co-founder of the International Society of Aviation Photographers and over a 50-year career is known as an author, publisher, consultant and aviation historian.

Admissions to his 2 p.m. talk are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID and $5 for children 11 and under, which includes entrance to the museum.

Visitors spending more at national parks, mouments

Visitors to New Mexico’s national parks and monuments spent more than $67 million in 2010.

That spending also supported more than 1,000 jobs in the state.

The findings are part of a report by the national park service.

White sands national monument had nearly 471,000 visitors who spent $16 million.

Around 428,000 visitors spent more than $23 million at Carlsbad Caverns in 2010.

Two firms split $1.2 million for hiring, training

The board overseeing a state jobs-incentive program has awarded $1.2 million to two companies that plan to hire 354 employees.

The bulk of the money–$1.16 million–is going to Lowe’s Home Centers, which is opening a call center in Albuquerque.

The Job Training Incentive Program money will support the hiring and training of 350 workers.

Lowe’s eventually expects to employ 600 people.

The high-tech company ClosedWon LLC was awarded $57,000 for its planned hiring of four employees.

ClosedWon consults in cloud computing and recently won a contract from a Fortune 100 company, according to a statement from the state Economic Development Department.

“JTIP continues to be a valuable asset for companies in New Mexico like ClosedWon and in bringing new companies to the state like Lowe’s,” Economic Development Secretary Jon Barela said in the statement. “Having a trained workforce is a cornerstone of economic development and JTIP helps in providing that valuable training assistance.”

Mayor Berry to recognize MMA & UFC champion Carlos Condit

Mayor Richard J. Berry will acknowledge local UFC champion Carlos Condit for his exceptional career as a fighter Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Jackson Gym.

The mayor will also proclaim February 29th- “Carlos Condit Day.”
