GOP governor appoints Dem state senator

December 30th, 2011 at 5:52 pm by under Latest Posts

Gov. Susana Martinez has appointed the only person recommended by the Bernalillo and Sandoval county commissions to fill a vacancy in the state Senate.

Late Friday Martinez, a Republican, announced she had appointed Lisa Curtis, a Democrat, to replace Republican Kent Cravens.

Cravens had a year left in his term when he resigned the District 21 seat to become a lobbyist.

Curtis, the president of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association, will have to stand for election to retain the two-county seat past the end of 2012.

Traditionally county commissions have offered replacement candidates of the same party as the departed legislator, and the commissions in two-county districts might propose separate replacements each from their own county.

In this case, both Democrat-controlled commissions voted 3-2 along party lines for Curtis, who lives in Bernalillo County.

The good old boy system in Santa Fe is alive and well, tactics like this will ensure that it remains so. Two counties with the majority of our states population and only one person was considered for the Senate appointment? Has anyone noticed that this gives Democrats one more Senate vote in the upcoming legislative session?

This is something that needs to be changed. By law, commissioners from both counties should have had to recommend two people for consideration, one from each party or no party affiliation at all. Four names in the hat instead of one. Forcing the governor, any governor, to appoint someone to a Senate seat because that was the only person recommended smacks of partisian politics. The kind of good old boy politics we New Mexicans are sick and tired of.

Once again the libs doing what they do best….s******* the citizens of NM. This is why NM is first in everything bad and last in everything good. It’s never going to change as long as the libs run the state.

Well…look at the reasons that led to this. GREED!!! Your homeboy republican went on to become a selfish lobbyist to payoff your libs and republican rats so they can look out for themselves first. YOU the NM people will always be left out. Plus, you got another freakin lawywer to fill his shoes. See it does not matter repub or libs…this lawyer scum always look out for themselves first…everybody knows that! We NM’s are sick and tired of this kind of BS. You need people that care about other people more than themselves….you know anybody like that??? Until then, good luck!
