Add to the list of border-security issues the eight rolls of Mexican bologna Customs and Border Protection agents seized trying to enter the United States at a crossing in El Paso, Texas, on Friday.
Agents using a density meter discovered the 76 pounds of banned bologna in the spare tire of a Ford F-150 pickup truck during a secondary inspection at the Paso del Norte border crossing, according to a statement released by CPB.
The driver, a resident of Sunland Park, N.M., was assessed a $1,000 civil penalty and released.
“This bologna is a prohibited product because it is made from pork and has the potential for introducing foreign animal diseases to the U.S. pork industry,” CBP El Paso Port Director Hector Mancha said. “This is a highly unusual seizure because of the concealment method.”
